Sawdust is the easy feedstock — until it is wet
Of the three common woody feedstocks, sawdust is the one a pellet mill likes best. It arrives already small, so there is no chipper and often no hammer mill. Clean softwood sawdust carries under 1% ash, so ring dies last toward the long end of their range. Pellets made from it meet ENplus A1 and ISO 17225-2 with little effort.
The single thing that goes wrong on sawdust lines is moisture. Fresh sawdust from green lumber arrives at 45–55% water. The die wants 10–15%. Everything between those two numbers is a dryer, and a sawdust line that under-performs almost always has a dryer that was sized for the brochure moisture rather than the moisture that actually arrives. So this guide treats the question in the order the plant experiences it: first the capacity tier, then the moisture, and only then the brand.
Choose the tier before the model
Plant size sets the mill. At 7,000 operating hours a year, each tonne per hour of rated output is roughly 7,000 tonnes a year, and export off-take contracts in Japan and Korea typically start at 50,000 tonnes a year. Kingwood’s ring-die range maps to the tiers as follows.

Two rules follow from the table. First, buy the tier you will run, not the one you hope to grow into: a mill run far below rated load wastes electricity and wears dies unevenly, and one pushed past rating stops often. Second, above 5 t/h prefer several mills in parallel over one large machine. A die change on one of three mills leaves the line at two-thirds output instead of zero, and die changes can be staggered so no two fall due together.
Why the 688D is the factory pick for sawdust: on this feedstock, electricity is the dominant operating cost, because there is no chipper to run and the dryer’s burner is a fuel cost rather than a power cost. Sizing the line for wet sawdust
A sawdust line in its simplest form is:
drum dryer → (hammer mill, only if particles exceed 5 mm) → pellet mill → counter-flow cooler → packaging
The dryer is where the specification is won or lost. It must be sized on the incoming moisture and the rated throughput together: evaporating sawdust from 50% to 12% removes about 0.8 tonne of water for every tonne of dry-basis product, and a dryer specified for 30% incoming moisture will bottleneck a line fed at 50%. Ask the supplier for the dryer’s evaporation capacity in kg of water per hour and check it against your own sawdust, not the brochure’s.
Three practical points on moisture:
- 10–15% at the die, wet basis. Below 8–10% the material generates friction heat and the pellets crumble; above 15% the die blocks and pellets are soft.
- 18–20% costs 20–30% of throughput. Operators tempted to skip the dryer on “slightly damp” sawdust pay for it in output every shift.
- Kiln-dried sawdust may not need drying at all. Furniture-plant and secondary-processing sawdust often arrives at 8–12%; a moisture meter at intake tells you whether the dryer runs or idles.
Electricity on a sawdust line runs roughly 40–60 kWh per tonne for pelletizing, 5–10 kWh/t electrical for the dryer (whose burner fuel is the larger cost), and grinding plus cooling for the balance, giving a typical 60–80 kWh/t total. Those figures assume 10–15% moisture at the die; wet material pushes every one of them up.
How the manufacturers compare on sawdust
The sawdust tiers above are served by three kinds of supplier, and they are not interchangeable.
Andritz and CPM build the largest integrated pelleting lines and have the longest track records. On sawdust their equipment is specified mostly at the top of the range — multi-mill plants where the whole line, from dryer to cooler, is engineered and guaranteed by one team. That guarantee is what the capex premium buys.
Kingwood and Yulong are the two Chinese manufacturers with their own factories covering the 1–8 t/h tiers with ring-die mills and complete wet-feed lines. - Incoming sawdust moisture, measured on your material over a week, not quoted from memory.
- Particle size distribution: does more than a small fraction exceed 5 mm? If yes, a hammer mill goes in the line.
- Capacity tier from the table above, and whether one mill or several in parallel.
- Dryer evaporation capacity in kg water/hour, checked against item 1 at rated throughput.
- Target pellet standard (ENplus A1, ISO 17225-2, KFQC, SBP) so die compression ratio and cooler are specified to it.
- A named sawdust installation at your tier from the supplier, with die life and a contact.
